School To Career

School to Career is a multi-faceted program aimed at providing students at BMR the opportunity to do extensive career exploration. The various STC components enable students to be better informed when making decisions regarding their post-graduation plans. Through STC activities, vital connections can be made between students’ academic courses and the workplace.

Job Shadow Day is held in the fall of each year for the sophomore class. After doing some career research using written and electronic media, students are assisted in making the necessary arrangements for a day-long work site visit. On the appointed day, the involved students go to their individual sites giving them the opportunity to actually experience that job or career to determine if it is an interest that they wish to pursue further. A reflective essay is then passed in to their English teacher as part of their semester grade.

In the spring, there is an out-of-district career fair for sophomores and a Career Awareness Day for juniors. There is also a National College Fair Day held for juniors in April. During the Career Awareness Day, a variety of presenters are invited to BMR to give an overview of their individual careers. Informal conversations at each booth allow speakers to present a realistic picture of both the positive and negative aspects of his/her work, how this goal can be achieved, and field student questions.

Juniors and seniors are encouraged to apply to participate in a semester-long internship program within the school district or at an external worksite related to their career interest. Successful completion of the internship involves continued interaction with their Career Specialist, maintenance of written logs, and a final paper relative to their experiences. Meeting these requirements satisfactorily provides students with ½ credit toward graduation.
