Blackstone-Millville Regional School Committee names new Superintendent
as Educational Leader of the School District
On Monday evening, February 26, 2018, the
Blackstone-Millville Regional School District School Committee announced, by
unanimous decision, Dr. Jason DeFalco as its new Superintendent of Schools. The School Committee chose DeFalco for his passion for
public education, established instructional leadership roles across grade
levels, strength in collaboration, and focus on increasing student learning and
DeFalco will begin his tenure as the Superintendent for Blackstone-Millville on
July 1, 2018.
According to Jane Reggio, School Committee Chairman, “The School Committee looks forward to welcoming Dr. DeFalco to our district and introducing him to the families that we serve. Dr. DeFalco stood out among the field of candidates for his passion and proven track record in making student-focused decisions that support academic success. He has expertise in instructional strategies, innovative professional development programs, and a strong understanding of K-12 curriculum. His strength as a communicator and collaborative leader focused on building relationships will continue Dr. DeFalco’s successes. We want to thank our entire community who played an active role during this very public process, and we believe that Dr. DeFalco will be a visionary leader and a great match for our staff, students, and communities.”
Dr. DeFalco, a resident of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, is the current Deputy Superintendent of the New Bedford Public School System. He comes to Blackstone-Millville with over 17 years of experience in public education. Prior to arriving in New Bedford, DeFalco has experience as a middle school principal in both Somerville and Worcester, Massachusetts. Dr. DeFalco earned a Doctorate of Education Degree from Johnson and Wales University in School Leadership and Administration and also holds a Master’s Degree in School Leadership and Administration from Worcester State College. Dr. DeFalco comes to Blackstone-Millville with extremely high recommendations from his current Superintendent, Dr. Pia Durkin.
Blackstone-Millville School Committee was committed to a rigorous
superintendent search process and with providing the community clear and
comprehensive information and input that began last November. The Committee
conducted focus groups and community surveys to provide input on the desired
qualities of the next superintendent. Consistent themes shared included a
person who understood the teaching/learning process, the importance of
educational technology, a strong financial manager, a leader who was approachable/accessible
and innovative and who could articulate a clear and consistent message, one who
could build bridges between the two communities and the district, who believed
in public education, who was collaborative and someone who could build trust. More than 20 applicants applied for the
