Blackstone-Millville Regional School Committee names new Superintendent as Educational Leader of the School District

On Monday evening, February 26, 2018, the Blackstone-Millville Regional School District School Committee announced, by unanimous decision, Dr. Jason DeFalco as its new Superintendent of Schools.  The School Committee chose DeFalco for his passion for public education, established instructional leadership roles across grade levels, strength in collaboration, and focus on increasing student learning and achievement.  Dr. DeFalco will begin his tenure as the Superintendent for Blackstone-Millville on July 1, 2018.

According to Jane Reggio, School Committee Chairman, “The School Committee looks forward to welcoming Dr. DeFalco to our district and introducing him to the families that we serve.  Dr. DeFalco stood out among the field of candidates for his passion and proven track record in making student-focused decisions that support academic success. He has expertise in instructional strategies, innovative professional development programs, and a strong understanding of K-12 curriculum. His strength as a communicator and collaborative leader focused on building relationships will continue Dr. DeFalco’s successes. We want to thank our entire community who played an active role during this very public process, and we believe that Dr. DeFalco will be a visionary leader and a great match for our staff, students, and communities.”

Dr. DeFalco, a resident of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, is the current Deputy Superintendent of the New Bedford Public School System.  He comes to Blackstone-Millville with over 17 years of experience in public education.  Prior to arriving in New Bedford, DeFalco has experience as a middle school principal in both Somerville and Worcester, Massachusetts.  Dr. DeFalco earned a Doctorate of Education Degree from Johnson and Wales University in School Leadership and Administration and also holds a Master’s Degree in School Leadership and Administration from Worcester State College.  Dr. DeFalco comes to Blackstone-Millville with extremely high recommendations from his current Superintendent, Dr. Pia Durkin.

The Blackstone-Millville School Committee was committed to a rigorous superintendent search process and with providing the community clear and comprehensive information and input that began last November. The Committee conducted focus groups and community surveys to provide input on the desired qualities of the next superintendent. Consistent themes shared included a person who understood the teaching/learning process, the importance of educational technology, a strong financial manager, a leader who was approachable/accessible and innovative and who could articulate a clear and consistent message, one who could build bridges between the two communities and the district, who believed in public education, who was collaborative and someone who could build trust.  More than 20 applicants applied for the position.

The School Committee looks forward to welcoming Dr. Jason DeFalco and is confident that Dr. DeFalco’s vision and spirit are a perfect match for the Blackstone-Millville Regional School District and its two communities.
