There are seven important lines of
latitude you should know about. First
there is the North Pole. It is located
in the Arctic, and it is labeled 90 º N. It is the most north you can go. Next there is the Arctic Circle.
It is labeled 66 and 1/2ºN. It
runs though Canada and Alaska.
Then there is the Tropic of Cancer and its amount of degrees is 23 and
1/2º N. After that in the middle of the
Earth is the equator. At 0º the equator
separates the northern hemisphere from the southern hemisphere. On the opposite side of the world there is
the Tropic of Capricorn labeled 23 and 1/2ºS.
The second to last line of latitude is the Antarctic Circle.
The Antarctic
Circle is
labeled 66 and 1/2º S. It is right above
the South Pole. The South Pole is at the
bottom of the Earth and it is labeled 90ºS.
It is the farthest south you can go.
These lines of latitude help us label and locate places on a map or
globe.
