Lines of Latitude

By:  JULIA JACKSON

There are five major lines of latitude.  Lines of latitude are imaginary lines running horizontally around the Earth.  At 66 1/2ْ north is the Arctic

Circle. Then the Tropic of Cancer is located at 23 1/2ْ north.  The equator, a line of latitude which absorbs a ton of sun, is 0 ْْْ˚.  Countries located closer to the equator are warmer than others.   For instance, Florida is warm almost all of the time because it is located near the equator.

23 1/2˚ south is the location of the Tropic of Capricorn, a line of latitude under the equator. A good way not to confuse the two, (Capricorn & Cancer) is to remember that the one that comes first alphabetically is the one that comes higher on the map. The Antarctic Circle is located at 66 1/2˚ south.   At 90˚ north & south are the North & South Poles.

There are different kinds of lines of latitude. There’s high middle, and low.  The low latitudes are located between the Tropic of Cancer, the Tropic of Capricorn, and the Equator. The middle latitudes are located in-between the Arctic Circle and Tropic of Cancer, and between the Tropic of Capricorn, and the Antarctic Circle. The high latitudes are between the Arctic Circle and North Pole, and between the South Pole and Antarctic Circle.

I hope you have enjoyed the information I have been able to provide. There is so much to learn about the major lines of latitude. Try your hardest to learn more about the parallels of our Earth.  Have fun!
