Three students from the John F. Kennedy School have been selected as winners of the 32 nd Annual Paul G. Keough Earth Artists Program sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency. Those recognized at a ceremony held on June 4, 2004 at Faneuil Hall in Boston were: Julia Laporte, Caitlin Parenteau and Jon Cole. Hundreds of students from all over New England in Kindergarten through Sixth grade entered the poem and poster contest geared toward protecting the environment. Jon, Julia and Caitlin began their project in a small group communication development program in the classroom of Doris Poisson , their speech/language pathologist. The students took part in a discussion about environmental problems, created a graphic organizer on land, air and water pollution and used this organizer to prepare a rough draft. The final version of the poster was completed in Anita Burd ’s third grade classroom. Ms. Poisson, Mrs. Burd, the students and their families attended the ceremony. Their winning poster was projected onto a screen and enjoyed by the 700 in the audience. The winners received certificates for their hard work, creativity and interest in protecting the environment. |
