   In the 1730s and 40s, religion in the colonies was revived. Beginning in

Where, Why, How  preached about predestination and encouraged church members to believe and
   be devout. The sermons, saying that the people needed to reform and repent in
   order to gain salvation, gave churchgoers a renewed religious zeal. The new
   Awakening style preachers joined either the baptist church or other small
   churches. The awakening also caused schisms in some de-nominations and
   increased competition between churches.Many colleges also stemmed from the
   Great Awakening's message for gaining knowledge.
