9th Grade English Course Description:

1.1 9th Grade English

The course is designed to provide the student with a curriculum that is genre-based, giving students a wide range of literary experiences from the classical epic to the contemporary short story. Journal writing and writing open response questions and the 5 paragraph essay are emphasized. Other MCAS skills are also developed. All students read Romeo and Juliet. A research paper is required. On completing this course, 9th graders should show competency in:

 
  • Writing (academic and personal)
  • Making inferences from reading passages
  • Interpreting literature
  • Identifying/describing the elements of the major literary genres
  • Research skills
  • Making connections between literature and other disciplines
  • Using knowledge of standard grammar
  • Vocabulary development
  •  

    Advanced 9th Grade English

    This course is a college prep course and it encompasses all of the curriculum requirements of ninth grade English as described above, but at a higher level of difficulty. Students are responsible for a heavier load and generally more rigorous expectations in terms of writing and research. Students must complete summer reading and writing assignments. On completing this course, students should show competency in:
