Summer Reading | 9th Grade English | 10th Grade English | Creative Writing

JOURNAL REQUIREMENTS

Once each quarter (at times to be announced) I will ask you to submit ten (10) journal entries. The assignment will carry the weight of a test grade. A penalty of -10 will be given for day-late journals; a zero will be given if two days late. The requirements are as stated below.

1.) Your JOURNAL should be a collection of original material bound in one notebook or loose-leaf binder. Loose entries are not accepted. If you borrow portions of lyrics from a song, please be sure to give credit where it is due!

2.) Keep in mind that I will be reading your JOURNAL periodically. Therefore, inappropriate language or derogatory comments directed to or about other people will not be accepted. Never use the name of a faculty member or administrator in you journal. Period!

3.) Your material for the most part will be FICTION: create a poem; tell a story; start a play; compose a song (original please!); tell of a dream. Some non-fiction is also acceptable: review a movie; critique a book; reveal your ideas/solutions for a social/ world problem; report on a school function (in a journalistic way); etc.

Please do not confuse a JOURNAL with a DIARY. I cannot accept a day by day account of your life. That’s not creative writing. (sorry) Do not use your JOURNAL as a place to write about class or the teacher; likewise, do not use it as an opportunity to praise or compliment the teacher. I will be glad to make an appointment with you to address those issues.

4.) The graded entries must be ones other than those assigned and worked on in class. I will, however, occasionally assign a specific article to appear in your graded JOURNAL.

5.) Your JOURNAL work must be neat and legible.

6.) Each JOURNAL entry must be dated in the upper right hand corner of the page.

7.) Each JOURNAL entry must start on a clean page.

Think of your journal as part of your WRITING PORTFOLIO. Have fun with it, and most of all be proud of its contents.
