Blackstone-Millville Regional High School Announces 2021 Valedictorian and Salutatorian
Blackstone, Massachusetts March 26, 2021 – Natalie Hawkins and Gabriele Martinelli are leading the Blackstone Millville Regional High School Class of 2021. Both are members of the National Honor Society, where they uphold the standards of excellence in academia, leadership, community service and character.
BMR’s valedictorian is Natalie Hawkins. Natalie is the daughter of Lauren Hawkins of Milford, Massachusetts and Daniel Hawkins of Blackstone, Massachusetts. By the time she graduates, Natalie will complete 7 different AP courses, showing excellence in a range of subject areas. Her scores on her 2020 AP exams earned her the recognition of AP Scholar with Distinction, which is awarded to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.
Natalie has been a member of the nationally recognized Chargers Marching Band. Adding to her already busy schedule, Natalie is a member of the BMR Wind Ensemble and has been a member of the BMR Jazz Band for five years. In addition, Natalie has been part of Tri-M for the past three years and Winter Percussion. Natalie is a founding member of the Chargers for Change group at BMR that has worked to establish an environment in our community through the eyes of social justice.
Natalie’s favorite quote is “The beginning of purpose is found in creating something that only you understand,” by Tyler Joseph. Not only has Natalie shown incredible success in core academic classes, but she has also showcased incredible talent in her artwork, and recently earned a 5 on her AP Art portfolio during her junior year. Additionally, in March 2020, when our school went remote at the beginning of the pandemic, Natalie put together a piece of art that was sent to health care workers at a local hospital. This artwork depicted a health care worker as a hero who was physically defeating the virus in the picture. She performs acts of compassion such as this every day, with no expectation of attention or gratitude. She simply wants to make a difference in the lives of others by giving back in any way that she can, and she succeeds at doing so every day.
Natalie is an Abigail Adams Scholar, and was accepted to The Pratt Institute, Massachusetts College of Art and Design and Rhode Island School of Design. She is also Vice President of our National Honor Society. Natalie was selected as a finalist for the DESE Presidential Scholar’s Award and represented Blackstone-Millville Regional High School for the Worcester County Superintendent Association’s Scholarship. She is also a recipient of the Highest Honors Distinction for the Society of Women Engineers in recognition of her achievement in the STEM field. Natalie plans to attend the Rhode Island School of Design and study Art with a focus on Illustration.
BMR’s salutatorian is Gabriele Martinelli. Gabriele is the daughter of Dennis and Debra Martinelli of Blackstone, Massachusetts. By the time she graduates, Gabriele will complete 9 different AP courses, showing mastery across all core subjects. Her scores on her 2020 AP exams earned her the recognition of AP Scholar, which is awarded to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams.
Gabriele has been accepted to some prestigious schools, including Quinnipiac University,
Roger Williams University, Johnson and Wales University, Springfield College, Providence College, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and Northeastern University. Her compassionate nature shines through various community service activities, including serving as a peer tutor for various subjects throughout the entirety of her junior year, while also working with 5th-grade students to teach them how to play the clarinet.
She has been a part of our National Champion Marching Band since freshman year, where she currently serves as both Section Leader and Drum Major, two positions that require strong leadership and collaboration skills. She is also part of the BMR Wind Ensemble. Her passion for music also led to her induction into the Tri-M Music Honor Society, where she served as service coordinator during her junior year, and currently serves as Vice President. She is also the President of National Honor Society and the Treasurer of her Senior class.
Gabriele has received the Abigail Adams scholarship and is also a recipient of the Highest Honors Distinction for the Society of Women Engineers in recognition of her achievement in the STEM field. She plans to study Biology/Health Sciences at either the University of Massachusetts Amherst or Northeastern University in the fall.
On behalf of the Blackstone-Millville Regional High School faculty and staff, we are honored to have these two individuals represent the class of 2021.
